The 300 SL (W194) race car debuted in 1952 and achieved stunning success on the track, proving its extraordinary strength. At that time, American importer Max Hoffman played a pivotal role. He had long suggested that Mercedes-Benz launch two two-seater sports cars in different sizes, which eventually led to the mass production of the W 121 B II (190 SL) and W198 (300 SL) models. Both series made their debut at the 1954 New York International Auto Show.

Even with the huge success of the gull-wing 300 SL, Hoffman was not satisfied. Driven by his promotion, the more comfort-oriented convertible version 300 SL (W198 II) was launched in 1957. Production lasted until 1963, with a total of 1,858 units of this classic roadster built. Later, with the launch of the 230 SL (Pagode, W113), Mercedes-Benz no longer divided the SL series into large and small models, stepping into a brand-new era.

The 300 SL was not only recognized as the fastest production sports car of its era but also brought numerous groundbreaking innovations to the automotive industry. It was the first production car to feature brake assist for drum brakes, later upgraded to standard four-wheel disc brakes. It pioneered gasoline direct injection technology in mass-produced vehicles, while its dry-sump lubrication system was directly derived from motorsport engineering. Mercedes-Benz also offered seat belts as an optional accessory for the first time on its passenger cars.
